Major Responsibilities: The employee will work to support a multi-project platform requiring expertise in nanostructured material synthesis and synthetic chemistry. S/he will work in individual or team capacity to provide solutions to a variety of problems with the formulation, characterization, engineering and property optimization of various types of nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires or other nanostructures). Moreover, the employee will be expected to contribute to solutions involving surface chemistry as it pertains to surface functionalization to optimize performance or achieve a desired set of electrophysical properties. S/he will have to be able to translate between formulation recipes and their impact to physical and electrical characteristic of synthesized nanomaterials. S/he should have a very good understanding of Thin Film Device technology and the correlation between material and device characteristics. The individual will be expected to have a strong hands-on approach in the laboratory and good theoretical understanding of the various tools and process that are required in his/hers line of work. The employee may carry the additional task of maintaining a state-of-the-art chemical synthesis lab, where the bulk of the synthetic work will be carried out. To that end, substantial lab and hands-on chemical synthesis experience, including managing a chemical lab is highly desired. Some domestic and international travel required. Must be able to work extended hours. Must be able to sit at desk for extended periods of time. Must have command of English language adequate to communicate technical information
Job Requirements: Must – Skills / Knowledge Requirements: 1. Ph.D. degree in Chemistry (synthetic chemistry or other relevant field) strongly preferred. 2. Proven expertise with the synthesis of nanostructures (i.e. nanoparticles, nanowires, etc.) of different materials (Si, Ge, etc.) using a variety of synthesis techniques (i.e. plasma, laser and chemical synthesis). 3. Expertise in analysis and characterization of nanostructured materials (i.e. nano-particle size and composition analysis, nanowire characterization techniques, electron miscroscopy, etc.) 4. Experience in chemical functionalization of nanostructures to fine-tune and modify properties by engineering the surface characteristics of (for example) nanoparticles or nanowires. 5. Experience in scale up issues, especially with respect to issues relating to transferring laboratory science to large volume manufacturing. 6. Documented problem solving skills (with examples) and innovation/publication record. 7. Ability to run and maintain a chemical synthesis lab (ideally prior experience). 8. Excellent presentation and communication skills. Desired – Skills and Knowledge: Clean room experience. Basic understanding of electronic device function and fabrication. 5+ years after Ph.D.
