his appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
· The research focus is carbon nanotube (CNT) synthesis mechnisms to control structure and compressive strength. Under compressive loading, energy dissipation can be enhanced and varied through a stiffness gradient mechanism that depends on the morphology, purity of the CNTs and entanglements among CNTs.
· The approach includes investigation energy dissipation capabilities of vertically aligned CNTs) as a function of growth conditions and mechanisms to synthesize highly energy absorbing nanocoiled CNT structures. Identify unique 3D-structures in as–grown CNTs to lateral energy transfer and construct a mechanistic model of strain rate behavior of VACNTs.
· The research participant will conduct synthesis of CNTs and develop process models to control 3D structures in the CNTs. Will also prepare quarterly research progress reports.
Applicants should be pursuing or have received a PhD in Engineering, Physics or related discipline WITHIN THE LAST FIVE YEARS or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Faculty on sabbatical also considered. The Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a consortium of over 100 colleges and universities. One of its missions is to operate the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) program for Federal Facilities. ORISE has been administering research participation programs since 1946. Annually, ORISE places 4,000 individuals in various education and training programs including about 1400 in long-term research participation programs.
