Nanotech Job – Principal Research Scientist – Surface & Nanoanalysis Group
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK’s leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.
NPL occupies a unique position as the UK’s National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join NPL’s dynamic Surface & Nanoanalysis Group to lead a metrology project in matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). This project will be a major component of the newly established National Centre of Excellence in Mass Spectrometry Imaging (NiCE-MSI), which includes NPL’s world-class research in both secondary ion mass spectrometry and ambient surface mass spectrometries. NiCE-MSI is a joint partnership with the University of Nottingham and this post is a joint appointment. The major focus of the role will be leading the metrology of MALDI MSI, fundamentals of MALDI, technique innovation and advancing the measurement capability, data interpretation and analysis, providing leadership in the development of international standards, driving interactions and impact with the stakeholder community including industry, academia, other national measurement institutes and standards bodies. An important aspect of the role will be to integrate the activities within NiCE-MSI at both NPL and the University of Nottingham and grow the area at NPL through seeking additional research funding and commercial work.
The position is jointly funded by the National Physical Laboratory and the University of Nottingham. The appointee will be an employee of the National Physical Laboratory. It is a requirement that the employee be based at NPL for 80% of the time and at the University of Nottingham for 20% of their time.
The position is at the Principal Research Scientist / Professorial level, so would suit someone with an established international reputation in MALDI and a strong publication and grant funding track record. Evidence of leading research projects, including supervision of students and post-doctoral researchers (or equivalent), is required
This is a three year fixed-term post. Candidates will be considered for permanent positions that arise during this period or thereafter.
As part of the Serco Group plc, we offer competitive salaries, a wealth of career opportunities and a wide range of benefits.
